New dentures are designed to fit snugly against your gums when first placed. However, as your gums naturally change shape over time, your dentures may become loose and shift more easily. Getting your dentures professionally relined every one to two years helps keep them stable, comfortable, and functioning properly.

Every full denture should receive a hard reline every two years. At Picasso Dental, we carefully remove a thin layer of acrylic from the inside of your denture and apply a putty-like material that molds precisely to the current shape of your gums. Then, your denture is sent to our trusted lab where it’s reshaped to ensure a tight, comfortable fit that maximizes contact with your mouth.
Soft Denture Reline
For patients with sensitive gums or sore spots, a soft denture reline may be a better option. This pliable material remains flexible for one to two years and reduces irritation compared to hard acrylic relines. If frequent discomfort persists, you might consider more lasting solutions like implant-retained dentures.
Temporary Relines
If your dentures haven’t been adjusted in a while, your gums may appear red, swollen, or misshapen. This can make it difficult to take accurate impressions for a reline. In such cases, a temporary or palliative (medicated) reline helps reduce inflammation by providing a softer, snug fit. After a few weeks of healing, your gums will be ready for a permanent hard or soft reline.
